A student that is learning is advised to start with free tools first. Or at least they should make use of inexpensive tools that will not cost them much.
Once they start marketing themselves and making money they can go to premium ones.

What free and inexpensive tools and platforms will you recommend?

Canva is one of the most complete graphic design tool which any graphic design student can have access to free of charge and still be able to do most of the things a paid graphic design software can do.

GIMP and canva is always going to be one of the best graphic design software which is completely free of charge that a student can start learning with. You don't have to pay for Photoshop as a student because you can do everything you want to learn with Canva.

Canva is my favourite free graphics design tool to work it. Why? It's because of the inbuilt templates that makes it very easy to work on any graphics design projects I have. I can't choose when Photoshop over Canva.

There are so many tools which are free a graphics designer use to complete series of jobs. The one's I've used are ;

1. Canva
2. GIMP
3. Inkscape
4. Pixlr

Canva can do about 60-70% of what Photoshop can do while GIMP can run up to 70-85% of what Photoshop can deliver. This makes both Canva and GIMP the best two alternative to paid tools.

As a student, there's no need to look at using premium graphic design tool because they are very expensive. Unless if there's a discount available to use, it's better to use free tools like Canva and GIMP.

Canva is the one I make use of to learn many things I wanted. It has almost all the templates used for design and they are free of charge.

Canva is a good and popular choice for those who are starting a new. The challenge is that it may end up limiting such a person if you are just focused on going far with graphic designing.

I can't disagree that it can limit one from going far but the worst limitation that can stop such a person is if they are not creative. There's no way you can't go far with your creativity even if you are using the free templates.

Canva is such an underrated tool for design. If you start with it first then you will be able to understand the rudiments of design. Besides, if you even opt for the premium version it is actually very cheap.
