Will you use design tools without CMYK support? A few of the free tools come without print profile support by default.

If you are making use of free design tools, you are likely left with no options than to get one. It is just what it is as you don't have such options for you.

I have had some issues on this before with using GIMP but I later found a workaround when I created a business card. What I did was design in Inkscape and then convert to CYMK using Scribus.

CMYK is a color model used in printing. For those who doesn't know what it means, it stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (Black). Working with tools that have CMYK SUPPORT helps printers to reproduce a vast array of colors accurately on paper. I always prefer work with tools that support CYMK.
