I don't use costly fonts. I can only go for the free fonts for all my designs. There's no reason for anybody to know that I didn't use costly font on my design.
I haven't ever bothered with using costly fonts for any of my work. This is because all the one's I've been using are well appreciated by my clients. The one time I'll be willing to use a costly font is what it was on request by a client who will eventually pay for it.
My mentor works with Helvetica Now and GT Super. They are quite costly which I know for sure that it's not something that I can do. I try as much as possible to work with what I can be able to afford and so far so good, I have done a decent job of it without using costly fonts.
The free fonts have been able to get the job done for me over the years. I haven't had the need to work with paid fonts but whenever I do, I'm very sure it's going to be worth the buying based on how much I'll charge for the work.
I am very familiar with all the premium fonts which any graphics designer can work with but they never mattered to me for one second. This is because there are also so many free fonts which are too good as well for whatever I needed to design.
