What is your take on offering premium graphics alongside free ones? Do you think it helps designers survive financially?

It definitely helps to have both premium graphics and the free ones alongside because financially, everyone isn't in the same level. Premium graphics cost more but there's a far better chance to earn more with it while the free one's can get anyone by with what they have to work with.

Every graphics designer out there always want to make money from their efforts. It's why in the very end, premium graphics design is the root of what's more important. Offer of the free graphics design is like a strategy of advertising yourself only to be capitalised on in the future.
